Diversity Certificate Series

The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Education Program, in partnership with UC Davis Learning and Development, offers the Cross-Cultural Competence Certificate Series and the Understanding Diversity Certificate Series, both of which are aimed at developing and strengthening competencies in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion. 

 

Understanding Diversity Certificate Series

This five-course series provides an in-depth opportunity to examine differences in our community and gain a greater understanding of how we can work  together to create a more bias-free environment on campus. Those who complete the following five courses will receive a certificate of completion:

  • LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in the Workplace

  • Our campus strives for inclusion excellence in our policies and practices that consider the experiences of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community members. This course introduces laws and policies that inform our practices promoting inclusion of the LGBTQIA community. Among the course objectives include broadening our understanding of the experiences of LGBTQIA people on our campus by exploring the culture, language and terminology related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Using case studies, participants will gain awareness and knowledge of the issues that impact members of the LGBTQIA community in the workplace, and will engage in developing strategies the work towards creating a welcoming work environment.

  • Understanding Diversity and Social Justice

  • This course provides the foundation for understanding various concepts of diversity work by offering a format for exploring topics of social justice, privilege and power. Through personal sharing, group exercises, and dialogue, the ever persistent and ever changing dynamics of personal and societal structures which support inequality will be examined. Participants will also engage in learning skills to become allies for social equity. This session includes an exploration of how the pandemic has impacted this area of DEI.

  • Understanding Religious Differences in the Workplace

  • Our campus community includes a rich diversity of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices. This provides us with both opportunities and challenges as we strive to create environments that respect our various values and observances. This course will share information about various religious and spiritual traditions and offer strategies for honoring religious and spiritual differences in the workplace.

  • Understanding Generational Differences

  • There is a growing awareness of the "generational diversity" that exists in the workplace. Older, middle-aged and younger staff members may share common work tasks, but their values, approaches to work, communication styles and perceptions of each other may differ greatly. This course will explore some of the generational differences and provide useful approaches to creating a work environment that is productive and compatible for everyone.

  • Unpacking Oppression

  • This course offers an opportunity for participants to explore their questions about race and ethnicity in a safe environment. Participants will explore the cultural barriers to dismantling racism. By understanding the realities of privilege and power, we can participate more fully in antiracism work and foster an equitable campus community for everyone. This session includes an exploration of how the pandemic has impacted this area of DEI.

Cross-Cultural Competence Certificate Series

This six-course series explores the rich dynamics of cross-cultural interactions and provides participants with knowledge and skill to increase effectiveness in relating across cultural differences. Those who complete the following six courses will receive a certificate of completion:

  • Culturally Inclusive Language

  • Language plays an important role in determining how well members of our community feel respected and included. It is important to choose what we say, whether that be verbally, non-verbally, or over e-mail, to ensure that we are communicating mutual respect and understanding for the diverse perspectives and backgrounds in our community. This course will explore how our day-to-day communication can create a climate of equality and good-will on campus, and can help to improve the quality of our work relationships. This session includes an exploration of how the pandemic has impacted this area of DEI.

  • Disability Awareness in the Workplace

  • This course will increase your awareness of the lives and experiences of people with disabilities. We will also focus on developing skills to create a workplace environment that is respectful and inclusive of persons with disabilities.

  • Intercultural Communication and Competence

  • Cultural Competence has been defined as a set of skills and attitudes that allow individuals to effectively and appropriately communicate with people who are different from themselves. A culturally competent organization effectively and appropriately serves a diverse clientele and meets the varied needs of its diverse staff. This program will explore how individuals and organizations can become more culturally competent. Self and organizational assessment models will be presented and the various components of each stage of competence will be discussed.

  • Intercultural Recruitment and Selection

  • Managers are challenged to understand and develop skills to respond to the needs of a multicultural workforce. In the important task of hiring the best candidate for a job, managers must be aware of how culture affects the way people communicate throughout the selection process. This course will help managers assess their own cultural values and explore how they affect the recruitment, interviewing and selection processes.

  • Working with Diverse Student Populations

  • This course will explore the importance of understanding the diversity within our student population, the characteristics of a multicultural institution and the role of cross-cultural communication in effectively working with and advising an increasingly diverse student clientele. Objectives of this course include building skills and competencies to effectively communicate in intercultural interactions. Participants will gain a greater understanding of diversity as it relates to working with our student groups, discuss current practices and develop new ones in supporting our students’ needs, and discover new tools in creating a more welcoming and inclusive environments for our students through exploration of case studies in the area of student advising.

Preparing for Supervision Certificate Series

The Preparing for Supervision Certificate Series uses a blended learning approach combining instructor-led and e-learning courses. In addition, you will work on your individual development plan as you work on your transition from an individual contributor role to one of supervisor. This series includes the following courses managed by the Diversity & Inclusion Education Program:

  • Living the Principles of Community (eCourse)
  • This on-line course is designed to promote inclusiveness and respect in the work and learning environment at UC Davis, introducing the concepts to new members of the campus community while reinforcing them to existing members. Participants, especially UC Davis staff members and academic appointees, will become familiar with ways to integrate the UC Davis Principles of Community into their own workplaces and classrooms. This highly interactive course includes up-to-date information on discrimination, sexual harassment, affirmative action and diversity along with the University’s policies governing these issues. Through realistically subtle and complex scenarios, learners discover that there is more than one “right” way of preventing, managing and resolving conflicts related to these topics. This course will inform and equip participants with essential knowledge and skills, ultimately resulting in fewer such conflicts, improved morale, decreased institutional liability, and a more respectful and inclusive campus environment. Approximately 60 minutes in length.

Preparing for Supervision Certificate Series

 

Developing as a Supervisor Certificate Series

An effective supervisor models excellent interpersonal communication; inspires a common vision; demonstrates respect for a diverse community; encourages teamwork and collaboration; and coaches, evaluates and develops people in alignment with our university vision. A decision maker, problem solver, conflict manager, coach, motivator—these are some of the many roles a supervisor will assume. Designed for new-to-role supervisors, the Developing as a Supervisor Certificate Series series integrates the essential aspects of supervision at UC Davis. This series includes the following courses managed by the Diversity & Inclusion Education Program:

  • Diversity Awareness for New Supervisors and Leads

  • Supervisors at UC Davis contribute to a campus culture that values diversity. This course covers the skills necessary for working and leading in a multicultural community and explores ways to create a respectful and inclusive work environment. In addition, course discussions will focus on ways to integrate the UC Davis Principles of Community into your workplace.

Mastering Supervision Certificate Series

One of the most remarkable characteristics of our campus community is the caliber and commitment of its supervisors who play a most critical role in achieving excellence at UC Davis. The Mastering Supervision Certificate Series offers a combination of core courses and electives tailored to experienced supervisors’ needs. This series includes the following courses managed by the Diversity & Inclusion Education Program:

  • Leading and Managing a Multicultural Community 

  • Building an environment that doesn't just tolerate, but values diversity requires the active participation of everyone in the organization. This course will provide a model for developing our knowledge and skills to work and lead in a multicultural community. Participants will gain practical information about developing personal and organizational cultural competence that can be applied at work, at home or in community organizations. This session includes an exploration of how the pandemic has impacted this area of DEI.

Mastering Supervision Certificate Series

 

Advising International Students Certificate Series

The Advising International Students Certificate Series is for department staff, advisors and administrators who work with international students. The goal of the series is to give staff an overview of the international student population, the challenges faced by international students, the requirements that students must meet to stay in legal immigration status, and the basics of intercultural communication as it relates to the international student population. This series includes the following courses managed by the Diversity & Inclusion Education Program:

  • Conducting Culturally Inclusive Trainings

  • Developing training programs that engage participants of varied cultural backgrounds, abilities, learning styles, reading levels, and other differences requires thoughtful attention to training design and delivery. This course will give trainers the skills to conduct training courses that address the diverse needs of trainees, and ensure that the training content is accessible for all participants. The instructors will model culturally respectful training and provide valuable tools that novice and expert trainers alike can use.

International Scholar Services Certificate Series

The International Scholar Services Certificate Series is for department contacts and other administrators who work with international scholars. The goal of this series is to familiarize staff on the main campus and at the UC Davis Medical Center with basic immigration rules and regulations, as well as the forms, policies and procedures involved in hosting and/or employing international (non-immigrant) scholars. This series includes the following courses managed by the Diversity & Inclusion Education Program:

  • Conducting Culturally Inclusive Trainings

  • Developing training programs that engage participants of varied cultural backgrounds, abilities, learning styles, reading levels, and other differences requires thoughtful attention to training design and delivery. This course will give trainers the skills to conduct training courses that address the diverse needs of trainees, and ensure that the training content is accessible for all participants.
